Education stopped? NIOS is a real second chance .

NIOS is India's national open school board. You can complete Class 10 and Class 12 through it without attending a regular school — at your own pace, with subjects you choose. This page has the full, honest picture in plain language. And if you want help with the studying itself, Satyam Sir teaches here too.

What NIOS actually is

NIOS stands for the National Institute of Open Schooling — a national board under India's Ministry of Education that delivers school-level education and examinations through open and distance learning.

Put simply: the NIOS Secondary course is equivalent to Class 10, and Senior Secondary is equivalent to Class 12. NIOS states that its certificates carry the same recognition as those of other recognised boards. In September 2025, AICTE reiterated that NIOS qualifications are treated on par with CBSE, CISCE and State Boards for admission to AICTE-approved institutions — provided the other eligibility conditions are met.

But be clear about one thing: equal recognition does not mean automatic admission anywhere. Every college and university can set its own conditions — subject combination, percentage, age limit, or an entrance test. If anyone promises you "guaranteed admission through NIOS", walk away.

NIOS is the largest open schooling system in the world. Roughly 5.5 lakh learners enrol every year, and close to 28 lakh over the past five years. It operates through 22 Regional Centres and more than 3,500 accredited academic centres — including centres in the UAE, Nepal, Kuwait, Qatar, Muscat and Bahrain.

NIOS has its own toll-free number: 1800-180-9393
You can verify anything official directly with NIOS — before you talk to us, and after. We would rather you did.

Who NIOS is built for

Anyone whose schooling was interrupted

Family responsibility, money trouble, or any other reason. Even if years have passed, NIOS has no upper age limit.

Anyone who did not clear the board exam

Stuck on one or two subjects? Stream 2 exists specifically for learners who appeared at a recognised board but could not pass.

People studying alongside a job

Self-paced study, two exam cycles a year, and the On-Demand Exam — so the exam fits your preparation instead of the calendar.

Athletes and performers

Training schedules, tournaments and shoots make daily school attendance impossible. This is exactly where NIOS flexibility works.

Anyone who needs to change stream

Switching stream in a regular school is close to impossible. With NIOS you pick 5 to 7 subjects yourself.

Indian families living abroad

NIOS has accredited centres across the Gulf and in Nepal. Fees there are different — they are listed in the fees section below.

How admission works — the four streams

Which stream you apply through depends entirely on how far your previous schooling got. Choosing the wrong one can cost you a full year, so this is the first decision to get right.

Stream 1 — Block 1

The main route for new learners. Apply here and you sit the April examination of the following cycle.

Window: 16 March – 15 September

Stream 1 — Block 2

The same fresh admission, second window. Apply here and you sit the October examination.

Window: 16 September – 15 March

Stream 2

For learners who appeared at a recognised board but did not pass, or were eligible but could not sit the exam. Registration is ₹620 per subject.

Window: Set by NIOS notification

Stream 3 & 4

The On-Demand Examination route. Stream 3 is for Secondary, Stream 4 for Senior Secondary. Registration ₹620 per subject.

Window: Notification-driven
The Senior Secondary rule that catches most people: there must be a two-year gap between passing Class 10 and receiving the Class 12 certificate. If your gap is shorter, you can register for a maximum of four subjects in the coming examination. Check this before you pay anything.

Eligibility conditions

Requirement Secondary (Class 10) Senior Secondary (Class 12)
Previous qualification Class 8 passed Class 10 passed from a recognised board
Minimum age 14 years, with proof 15 years
Subjects Minimum 5, maximum 7 · one or two languages compulsory Minimum 5, maximum 7 · one or two languages compulsory
Admission validity 5 years 5 years
Special provision NIOS also offers a self-certification route, where the learner declares their own competence to take the Secondary course Two-year gap required after passing Secondary

The admission process, step by step

Confirm your stream

Use the eligibility checker above to see whether you fall under Stream 1, 2, 3 or 4.

Choose your subjects

Minimum five, maximum seven, with one or two languages compulsory. Check the eligibility rules of whatever course you plan to take afterwards, before you lock these in. The full subject list is below.

Get your documents ready

Age proof, proof of previous qualification, photograph and signature. A category certificate only if you are claiming a concession.

Fill the form on the official portal

Admission happens only on the official NIOS site, and the fee is paid directly there. Do not hand admission fees to anyone else — not to us, not to any agent.

Keep your reference number safe

You get a reference number the moment you submit. Once admission is confirmed you receive an enrolment number, and that is what you will need for TMA, hall ticket, results — everything.

Start studying, and do not skip the TMA

Do not wait for printed material to arrive — every textbook is free to download right here . And put the TMA deadline in your calendar today.

Official NIOS fees

Every amount below goes directly to NIOS, not to us. NIOS can revise fees and dates by notification at any time, so open the official page before you pay.

Stream 1 — admission fee for 5 subjects

Category Secondary Sr. Secondary
Male ₹2,340 ₹2,600
Female ₹1,890 ₹2,150
SC/ST · Ex-servicemen · Differently-abled ₹1,560 ₹1,690
Each additional subject ₹940 ₹940
Online application form ₹70 ₹70

This admission fee already includes PCP, registration and the cost of study material — that is stated on the official fee page itself.

Examination fee — charged separately

What How much
Public exam — theory ₹300 per subject
Public exam — practical ₹150 per subject (additional)
Exam form processing ₹50
On-Demand Exam (Streams 3 & 4) ₹500 theory + ₹200 practical
Stream 2 exam fee ₹250 theory + ₹120 practical
TOC (Transfer of Credit) ₹230 per subject
These are two different things. The admission fee is paid once. The examination fee is paid separately for every session in which you want to appear. Paying the admission fee alone does not register you for an exam — and the exam fee is non-refundable once paid.

Work out your own total

This is an estimate, not an invoice. The final amount is decided on the NIOS portal.

Late fee — the longer you wait, the more you pay

Block Normal fee window Late fee slabs
Block 1 16 March – 31 July 1–15 Aug: +₹260 · 16–31 Aug: +₹520 · 1–15 Sep: +₹910
Block 2 16 September – 31 January 1–15 Feb: +₹260 · 16–28 Feb: +₹520 · 1–15 Mar: +₹910
You are currently in the most expensive window. The 1–15 September slab adds ₹910. If you are not in a hurry, wait until 16 September — Block 2 charges the normal fee and gives you a full year to prepare.

Fees for learners outside India

Course Middle East Nepal
Secondary — 5 subjects $1,040 + $50 (form) NC 7,020 + NC 50 (form)
Sr. Secondary — 5 subjects $1,240 + $70 (form) NC 6,480 + NC 30 (form)

Late fee slabs $160 · $310 · $550 NC 1,040 · NC 2,080 · NC 3,640

These figures come from the official NIOS fee page. Fees abroad are higher because the local accredited centre's own arrangements are built into them. Confirm the details with the NIOS centre in your country before paying.

Two separate pockets — remember this one

NIOS official fee Goes straight to NIOS — not one rupee of it reaches us ₹1,560 – ₹2,670

This is where most learners get taken advantage of. If any institute or agent quotes you a single combined number for "NIOS fees", something is being hidden from you.

Syllabus structure from NIOS official subject pages · 11 September 2026

Syllabus, by subject code

Every NIOS subject is identified by a code, and its syllabus is divided into modules and lessons. This is not the same as the CBSE chapter order — so always study against your subject code.

The most common mistake: preparing for NIOS by watching CBSE videos on YouTube. NIOS Mathematics 211 is not CBSE Class 10 Maths under a different name — the modules differ and so does the depth. Always match the subject code.

Mathematics

TMA — the marks most learners simply throw away

The Tutor Marked Assignment is part of studying under Stream 1. It is your internal assessment: you write it at home and submit it to your allotted NIOS study centre.

Type of subject TMA marks The rest
Subjects without a practical 20 marks 80 marks — public exam
Subjects with a practical 10 marks Split between theory and practical
This distinction matters: Science 212, Physics 312, Chemistry 313 and Biology 314 all carry a practical, so the TMA is worth 10 marks in those, not 20. Mathematics, Social Science and the languages have no practical, so the full 20 marks apply there.

The point is simple: some of your marks can be banked before you ever walk into the exam hall. A learner who writes the TMA properly starts well above the 33% pass mark. A learner who skips it is playing against themselves.

TMA applies to Stream 1 only. Under the documented NIOS framework there is no TMA in Streams 2, 3 and 4. If you are in one of those, everything rests on the public exam or the ODE.

How to write a TMA — six things that actually matter

Read the question twice

"Explain", "distinguish between", "give an example" — each verb tells you what shape the answer needs. Most marks are lost here, not from lack of knowledge.

Write in your own words

Copying the textbook verbatim is the weakest possible answer. Read it, understand it, close the book, then write.

Let the marks decide the length

Do not write two pages for a 2-mark question. Do not dispose of a 5-mark question in two lines.

Include diagrams and examples

In Science and Social Science one clean labelled diagram says more than ten lines of text. Do not forget the labels.

Write legibly and leave margins

What cannot be read cannot be marked. Leave space between answers and number each question clearly.

Submit before the deadline

Do not wait for the last day. TMA dates shift by notification, so keep checking with your study centre.

Where we stand on this. We can teach you how to write a TMA, remind you of deadlines, and give feedback on your answers. But submitting and accepting it officially is your NIOS study centre's job, not ours. And you write your own TMA — we do not write it for you.

How the examinations work

This is the part that genuinely sets NIOS apart from every other board. Nothing here rests on a single day.

Question Answer
Public exam Twice a year — broadly April–May and October–November
Must you clear everything at once? No. NIOS allows credit accumulation, so you can clear different subjects in different examinations
How many chances Up to nine public-examination chances within the five-year validity
On-Demand Exam (ODE) The Stream 3 and 4 route — sit the exam when you are ready, subject to eligibility, validity and a seat being available
Pass mark 33%
Hall ticket, centre, result All available online. The hall ticket is released only once the exam fee has been paid

Credit accumulation — the biggest relief NIOS offers

At a regular board, falling short in one subject means repeating the entire year. Not here. You can sit three subjects in April, two in October, and the rest the following year. Everything you clear within the five-year validity simply accumulates.

That is why NIOS suits people holding down a job, learners whose preparation is uneven, and anyone who needs more time on one or two difficult subjects.

After the result — if it did not go your way

Sit it again

Re-appear only in the subject you fell short in, at the next cycle. Everything you have already cleared stays credited.

TOC — Transfer of Credit

If you have already passed some subjects at another recognised board, those can be transferred under the TOC rules. Fee is ₹230 per subject.

Rechecking

If you believe the marks were not totalled correctly, NIOS has a rechecking process. Dates are announced by notification after each result.

When does the hall ticket come out?
It appears online on the NIOS site a few weeks before the exam, and you download it using your enrolment number. Note that it is released only if you have paid the examination fee for that session.
Can I choose my own exam centre?
The centre is allotted by NIOS and appears on your hall ticket. This is why entering the correct state and city at admission matters.
Public exam or ODE — which is cheaper?
The public exam is cheaper at ₹300 per theory subject, against ₹500 for the ODE. But the ODE lets you sit when you are ready instead of waiting for the next cycle. If your preparation will be done by the next cycle, take the public exam. If waiting six months would cost you more than the difference, the ODE is worth it.
Is the exam fee refundable?
No. Once paid, the NIOS examination fee is neither refunded nor adjusted against another session. Choose your subjects carefully before paying.

Free study material, straight from NIOS

Every NIOS textbook is free and available as a PDF on the official website. You do not need to buy a single guide book. The official links are below.

Two formats are available. Ordinary PDFs, and DAISY — an audio format where the chapters can be listened to rather than read. That is genuinely useful if reading is difficult for you, or if you want to study while commuting. The material is published in Hindi, English, Urdu and several regional languages.
One important point. NIOS study material belongs to NIOS and is protected under Indian copyright law — that warning appears on the NIOS website itself. This is why we do not host those books here or make copies of them. We only link, so you get them directly from the source. Be wary of any website that hands you NIOS textbooks from its own servers.
Watch out for fake websites. NIOS publishes an official list of websites that look like NIOS but are not. Check that list before you pay anyone. And remember: NIOS fees are paid only at sdmis.nios.ac.in — nowhere else.

Why haven't the batches started yet? Because we are not willing to start a half-built one. The first batch runs only once every subject's syllabus map is complete and every subject has a teacher assigned. Satyam Sir teaches Mathematics and Physics himself; teachers for the remaining subjects are being appointed. Everyone on the waiting list hears first.
What we do not do: we do not guarantee admission, marks, or a place at any college. We never show the NIOS fee merged with our own. We do not write your TMA for you. We do not copy and redistribute NIOS textbooks. And we never describe ourselves as a NIOS centre — because we are not one.

What makes our classes different

Taught against the subject code

We follow the official NIOS syllabus. We do not show you a CBSE video and call it NIOS.

Satyam Sir teaches personally

No anonymous team, no recorded loop. Ask a question in a live class and you get the answer there and then.

Our own examples and diagrams

We do not read the NIOS book aloud. Concepts are explained in our own words, with our own worked examples.

TMA and exam, both covered

Every batch includes help with writing the TMA and preparation against the actual exam pattern.
